Friends of Muizenberg Park

The Friends group began its work in 2013. We are a volunteer association that has been entrusted by the City of Cape Town to look after the wellbeing of the Park. Thanks to the generous private donations of time, money, skills and resources; we have been able to make great progress in the park. Our mission is to connect community to Muizenberg Park; by striving to create a safe, well-loved green space which honours nature and heritage. If you’d like to get involved, get in touch.

HIGHLIGHT

Fynbos Restoration Project

The Friends of Muizenberg Park Fynbos Restoration Project is bringing indigenous fynbos back to the heart of our community, transforming a once-degraded corners and waterways of the park into a living showcase of the Cape Floristic Region. With support from the Table Mountain Fund, private donations and community investment, we have restored approximately 1,000 square metres of waterlogged lawn into a functioning wetland with seasonal and perennial spring-fed ponds, and planted nearly 3,000 locally-sourced fynbos and indigenous seedlings, with earlier phases achieving a 90% survival rate. The restoration is helping to create habitat for rare and threatened species, including the Blue Water Lily (Nymphaea nouchali), extinct in the wild, as well as Serruria foeniculacea and Psoralea glaucina. Designed as a place for both nature and people, the restored area includes a Fragrance Pathway featuring aromatic fynbos, child-friendly areas for exploring the wetland, and benches nestled between the plants. In 2027, we will embark of Phase 4 of the project. By bringing fynbos into an everyday public space, the project is demonstrating how local restoration can strengthen biodiversity while reconnecting our community with the extraordinary natural heritage of the Cape.
